Two new species of Fibuloides (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) from eastern Thailand

Abstract: Two new species of Fibuloides are described from eastern Thailand: F. tratensis Jaikla and Pinkaew, n.sp., and F. bulla Jaikla and Pinkaew, n.sp. Males of F. tratensis have modified labial palpi with specialized scales that have not been reported for other Tortricidae. Descriptions and illustrations of adults and genitalia are provided for the two new species collected from Trat Agroforestry Research and Training Station, eastern Thailand.

“…Although the tortricid fauna of Thailand remains poorly known, considerable progress has been made over the last decade (Pinkaew 2007, 2008, 2011, Pinkaew et al 2005, Pinkaew & Zhang 2012, Jaikla et al 2013. The two new species reported in this paper are the result of surveys of olethreutine moths in eastern Thailand during 2011-2012.…”

“…The genus is characterized by the follows features of wing venation: forewing with R 4 and R 5 stalked, with the base of R 3 close to this stem; CuA 1 strongly curved and originating near the base of M 3 ; and hindwing with M 3 and CuA 1 stalked (Horak 2006;Kuznetsov 1997). Fibuloides currently includes 30 described species occurring throughout the Australian, Oriental, and Palearctic regions, with the greatest species richness recorded from Southeast Asia, where 17 species are known (Jaikla et al 2013).…”

“…While our knowledge of the tortricid fauna of Southeast Asia has increased considerably over the past two decades with studies of the family in Vietnam (e.g., Razowski 2009a, b, Nedoshivina 2013, Heppner & Bae 2015a, b, 2016, Vi 2015 and Thailand (e.g., Kawabe 1987, 1989, Bae 1995, Pinkaew 2007, Jaikla et al 2013, Muadsub & Pinkaew 2014, Anan et al 2016, the tortricid fauna of the Lao People's Democratic Republic (Laos) remains poorly. In order to remedy this shortcoming, a survey of the subfamily Olethreutinae (Tortricidae) was conducted through a collaboration between Kasetsart University (Thailand) and the National University of Laos (Lao PDR).…”
