Two new species of Myxobolus (Myxozoa:Myxosporea:Bivalvulida) from freshwater fishes of Punjab wetlands (India)

Abstract: During the present study two new species were collected from mucous membrane around gill lamellae of Puntius sophore (Ham.) vern. chittal and Cirrhina mrigala (Ham.) vern. mrigal from Harike Wetland, Punjab respectively. Spore of the first species i.e. Myxobolus chittalii are histozoic, pear shaped with characteristic nipple-like anterior end and rounded posterior end. They measure 9.0 × 6.18 μm. “…About 67 genera are affirmed in the class of Myxosporea (Lom and Dyková 2006;Fiala et al, 2015), among which Myxobolus Bütschli, 1882 is the most species-rich genus. Among Indian fish, Kalavati and Nandi (2007) reported 103, while Kaur and Singh (2011) reported 130 known Myxobolus species. Myxozoans are one of the economically important groups of microscopic metazoan parasites as they infect fish that are harvested for food .…”
