Two new species of Sicyos (Cucurbitaceae) from Guerrero and Oaxaca, Mexico

Abstract: Two new species of Sicyos from Mexico are described and illustrated: Sicyos cordifolius from the state of Guerrero, which belongs to the group with dry, armed fruits, and Sicyos bulbosus from the state of Oaxaca, which belongs to the group with fleshy, unarmed fruits. Sicyos cordifolius is quite different from the rest of the species previously described. Although S. bulbosus is very similar to S. galeottii Cogn., it is clearly different in receptacle shape and size.

“…The Sicyos clade, including the segregate genera, is especially diverse in Mexico, where several new species have been discovered in the recent past (Lira, 1994; Lira & Rodríguez‐Arévalo, 1999; Rodríguez‐Arévalo & Lira, 2001; Rodríguez‐Arévalo, 2003; Rodríguez‐Arévalo et al. , 2004, 2005).…”

“…In Oaxaca, M. helleri (amole) roots are used as a soap substitute (Lira and Caballero, 2002) and they are very similar to S. bulbosus roots. Chemical studies on M. helleri roots established two saponins, named amoles F and G, as oleanane-type triterpene glycosides (León et al, 1998) while S. bulbosus (Rodríguez-Arévalo et al, 2004) has not been studied.…”
