Two new species of Stenaelurillus Simon, 1886 from India (Araneae: Salticidae: Aelurillina)

Abstract: Stenaelurillus digitus sp. nov. and Stenaelurillus gabrieli sp. nov. are described from India. New distributional records for Stenaelurillus albus Sebastian et al., 2015 and Stenaelurillus lesserti Reimoser, 1934 and maps for these species are given.

“…Stenaelurillus , recently reviewed by Logunov and Azarkina (2018), are ground-dwelling spiders, notable for the highly ornamented males of some species (Caleb and Sanap 2016). Most of its 45 known species are African (World Spider Catalog 2018; Wesołowska 2014b; Logunov and Azarkina 2018), but there is a centre of diversity in south Asia (see figure 507 of Logunov and Azarkina 2018), with 8 species in India (Caleb et al 2015; Caleb et al 2017b; Caleb and Mathai 2016; Logunov and Azarkina 2018; Prajapati et al 2016; Sebastian et al 2015; Vidhel et al 2015; Wesołowska 2014a), one from Iran (Logunov 2001), and one from Pakistan (Logunov and Azarkina 2018). We here describe a second species from Pakistan.…”

“…Another similar species -Stenaelurillus jagannathae Das Malik et Vidhel, 2015 -could also be a junior synonym of S. arambagensis because of the similar palpal conformation showing the strikingly similar structure of the thick apophysis in the embolar division accompanied by the short embolus. The variations seen in the palp of S. jagannathae, as reported by Prajapati et al [2016], could be attributed to a slight clockwise rotation of the bulbus, resulting in the positional change of the embolus from 12 o'clock to 1 o'clock (see figs 3-6 in Vidhel et al [2015]). The epigyne with the closely placed copulatory openings, the short insemination ducts and the closely placed spherical spermathecae (see figs 7-8 in Vidhel et al [2015]) also point to the possible synonymy of both species names.…”

“…An examination of freshly collected material from Peda Cherlopalle (Andhra Pradesh), Jalgaon (Maharashtra) and a re-examination of the type series of Marpissa arambagensis have revealed that S. digitus is identical to S. aramabagensis by the conformation of its copulatory organs (cf. Figs 3, 6, 7-13 with figs 7C-E, 8A-C in Prajapati et al [2016]), suggesting that the former name is a junior synonym of the latter.…”
