Two new Species of the Genus Neoseiulus (Parasitiformes, Phytoseiidae) With Redescriptions of N. Bicaudus and N. Micmac Based on Holotypes

Abstract: Phytoseiid mites of the genus Neoseiulus (Parasitiformes, Phytoseiidae), N. brachychaetus Kolodochka, sp. n. and N. akimovi Kolodochka, sp. n. from Georgia and Russia are described. Re-examination of the holotypes of N. bicaudus (Wainstein, 1962) and N. micmac (Chant & Hansell, 1971) revealed new characters for diff erentiation between similar species were found and proposed. Th e name N. micmac (Chant & Hansell, 1971) restored from synonymy here. A key to species similar to Neoseoiulus bicaudus is giv… Show more

“…Morphological characters and measurements of the current material are almost identical to those of the neotype described by Chant & Yoshida-Shaul (1982) as well as redescriptions (Ferragut 2018;Papadoulis et al 2009). Moreover, we were unable to find any reliable morphological difference to separate P. soleiger and P. intermixtus described by Kolodochka (1983). Therefore, we propose P. intermixtus as a junior synonym of P. soleiger.…”

“…All morphological characters mentioned above are of great importance due to them being widely used in delimiting species within the Phytoseiidae family. For instance, several studies have demonstrated the taxonomic utility of a single pair of solenostomes when distinguishing between two morphologically identical species (Kolodochka 2018;Khaustov et al, 2022). Thus, to avoid taxonomic confusions, such characters should be correctly illustrated and described.…”
