Two new species of the genus Kamaka (Crustacea: Amphipoda: Kamakidae) from Songkhla Lagoon, southern Thailand

Abstract: Two new species of the genus Kamaka Dershavin, 1923 (Crustacea: Amphipoda: Kamakidae) are described from Songkhla Lagoon in southern Thailand. Kamaka appendiculata sp. nov. has unique lamellate appendix on peduncle of antenna 2 in adult male. Kamaka songkhlaensis sp. nov. has swelled peduncular article 4 of antenna 2 and wide propodus of gnathopod 2 in adult male. Morphological characters of K. songkhlaensis closely resemble those of K. poppi Bamber, 2003 from Hong Kong and K. taditadi Thomas & Barnard, 19… Show more

“…The benthic biodiversity of the Songkhla Sea has been neglected and the few studies to date have focused on the Songkhla Lake (Angsupanich et al 2006;Ariyama et al 2010;Wongkamhaeng et al 2014) and Ko Nu, the nearshore Island (Rodchareon 2009).…”

“…This region has high marine biodiversity (Briggs 2000, 2005; Briggs and Bowen 2013; Carpenter et al 2011) but knowledge of marine crustaceans still remains minimal in the region, the non-decapod taxa having received relatively little attention (see Bruce et al 2002). Since 2000 several new species and new records of marine amphipods (Ariyama et al 2010; Wongkamhaeng et al 2012a, b, 2013, 2014), and isopods (Bruce and Olesen 2002; Storey 2002; Svavarsson 2002; Svavarsson and Gísladóttir 2002; Rodcharoen et al 2014, 2016) have been described.…”
