Two‐point discrimination and kinesthetic sense disorders in productive age individuals with carpal tunnel syndrome

Abstract: Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate two-point discrimination (2PD) sense and kinesthetic sense dysfunctions in carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) patients compared with a healthy group. Methods: The 2PD sense, muscle force, and kinesthetic differentiation (KD) of strength; the range of motion in radiocarpal articulation; and KD of motion were assessed. Results: The 2PD sense assessment showed significantly higher values in all the examined fingers in the CTS group than in those in the healthy group (p<… Show more

“…Professionally active women in the control group were randomly selected from different workplaces in the same region. Due to the nature of their work, the women were divided into 3 groups: white-collar worker, pink-collar worker and blue-collar worker [25]. This division was used due to the applied perpendicularly to the long axis of the distal phalanges of fingers I, II and III.…”

“…The occupational factors that may contribute to the development of CTS, described by various authors, include performing stereotypic, repetitive hand movements, heavy upper extremity workload, forced and uncomfortable working position and vibration IJOMEH 2019;32 (2) ties of the day. Disorders of diverse sensation types [25][26][27], pain [28,29], impairment of hand function [27,29], reduction of strength of the muscles responsible for functional efficiency of the hand and thus, reduction of strength of several grip types [27,30] in women diagnosed with CTS have been indicated in numerous scientific papers. Carpal tunnel syndrome also affects overall health status, both in its physical and mental components [31].…”

“…coordination, above all, comprises the motor skill sets needed to operate a motorcycle. it includes spatial orientation or the ability to recognize the position of the body in the environment; reaction time, which is necessary to initiate and execute appropriate actions in response to a specific stimulus; and the kinaesthetic differentiation of movement or what has been termed as force perception [6], kinaesthetic feedback [7], kinaesthetic sense [8,9], kinaesthetic information [10], or kinaesthetic feeling [11]. the concept of kinaesthesia was first proposed by bastian [12] to describe the ability to sense the position and movement of the body and extremities and the awareness of the speed, direction, and amplitude of a movement.…”

“…In the initial period of the disease, there are temporary subjective symptoms (i.e., pain, night-time paraesthesia, numbness, and tingling in the area of the medial nerve innervation), which escalate with time. Then, the disorders of various types of sensation develop, and in acute forms, there is impairment of the motor function of the hand (Wolny et al, 2015;Wolny et al, 2016;Chang et al 2008). This leads to a reduction in the mobility of the hand, which can adversely affect working life, daily activities and overall health (Wolny et al, 2016;Chang et al 2008;.…”
