Two questions may be enough – screening for depression in patients with psoriasis: a multicenter study

Abstract: Background: Depression is frequently underdiagnosed and insufficiently treated in psoriatic patients in their daily routine. The aim of this study was to screen and analyze the impact of patient and disease characteristics on depression scores. Patients and Methods: In this cross-sectional multicenter cohort study, adult psoriasis patients were screened for depression with two validated tools: the Whooley questions and the revised Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II). “…The BDI‐II consists of 21 items and ranges from 0 to 63, with scores ≥ 13 indicating at least mild depressive symptoms [18, 19]. The impact of patient and disease characteristics on screening results have been reported previously [20]. Patients with a BDI‐II score ≥ 13 were given a letter for their general practitioner requesting further evaluation of depressive symptoms.…”

“…16 A German multicenter study found high correlations of the TQT and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) 17 in psoriasis patients, confirming it as a useful tool for the early detection of depression in this patient cohort. 18 So far, however, the TQT's associations with measures specific for psoriasis patients, such as the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) or the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) 19 have not been assessed. Another aspect that has not been examined yet is whether the TQT is sensitive to change and thus useful for monitoring patients' progress.…”
