Two-Stage Adaptive Line Enhancer and Sliced Wigner Trispectrum for the Characterization of Faults from Gear Box Vibration Data

Abstract: Impulsive sound and vibration signals in gears are often associated with faults which result from impacting and as such these impulsive signals can be used as indicators of faults. However it is often difficult to make objective measurements of impulsive signals because of background noise signals. In order to ease the measurement of impulsive sounds embedded in background noise, it is proposed that the impulsive signals are enhanced, via a two stage ALE (Adaptive Line Enhancer), and that these enhanced signal… Show more

“…However, the Wigner-Ville distribution of a multi-component signal contains unwanted interference terms (Wigner, 1932, Lee andWhite, 1997;Lee and white, [998a;Lee and White, 1999;. The wavelet transform is An alternative formulation of the CWT, (3), can be obtained by expressing x(t) and !fr(t) via their Fourier transforms, X(a) and !fr(w), respectively: = rc;;f.1+ 00…”

“…PWVD is, however, sensitive to the background noise because the PWVD uses the second order statistic of acoustic wave data measured in the sensor. Combined higher order time-frequency (CHOTF) method [23,24] has a strong advantage in detecting the signal with lower signal to noise ratio. In this study, CHOTF is employed to determine the group velocity of flexural mode and to calculate the arriving times of dispersive waves at the sensors installed on the elastic plate to detect the location of impact load.…”

“…The vibration signal measured on rotating machinery is useful for system identification, and several studies on gearbox fault detection have employed this vibration signal analysis [1][2][3][4][5]. In general, it is known that the vibration signal measured on the gearbox consists of the tooth meshing frequency, its harmonic orders component, its side-band component, ghost components and broadband noise in frequency domain [1].…”

“…In general, the side-band component is associated with the fatigue crack of teeth [2]. To identify the impulsive signals embedded in other components, cpstrum analysis [1], phase modulation [2], krtosis evaluation [3] and time-frequency methods [4] have been used. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages.…”
