Two-Step Spin-Transition Iron(III) Compound with a Wide [High Spin-Low Spin] Plateau

Abstract: A new iron(III) coordination compound exhibiting a two-step spin-transition behavior with a remarkably wide [HS-LS] plateau of about 45 K has been synthesized from a hydrazino Schiff-base ligand with an N,N,O donor set, namely 2-methoxy-6-(pyridine-2-ylhydrazonomethyl)phenol (Hmph). The single-crystal X-ray structure of the coordination compound {[Fe(mph)(2)](ClO(4))(MeOH)(0.5)(H(2)O)(0.5)}(2) (1) determined at 150 K reveals the presence of two slightly different iron(III) centers in pseudo-octahedral environm… Show more

“…Direct hydrogen bonding between spin-crossover centres in a crystal would be expected to transmit cooperativity most efficiently. Compounds where such direct hydrogen bonding may play a role in producing notably cooperative spin-transitions include [Fe(Im) 2 (L 1 )] (Section 3.2), 152 [Fe(5,5 0 -di{nitro}saltrien)] and its derivatives (Section 2.3.1), 67,68 [Fe(mph) 2 ]ClO 4 (Hmph = 2-methoxy-6-{pyridine-2-ylhydrazonomethyl}phenol) 173 174 However, there are at least as many examples of materials with comparable amounts of inter-complex hydrogen bonding, but weaker cooperativity. 53,85,87,136,175 Hydrogen bonding between a complex and anions or lattice solvent is more common, but might be expected to have a weaker influence on communication between the complex molecules in a crystal.…”

“…This query signature was subsequently uploaded to the Connectivity Map (cmap), to find other compounds with similar mechanism of action. The VLX50 signature showed strongest similarity to 2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde pyridin-2-ylhydrazone, ciclopiroxamine, and deferoxamine, all known to be potent iron chelators [25][26][27] (Fig. 5A).…”

“…1 Particularly interesting and still comparatively rare is stepped SCO in which the SCO occurs in two or more steps. [11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18] As there are more steps, more spin states are accessible potentially resulting in devices of increased complexity and broader applicability. In addition to greater potential functionality the nature of stepped SCO is also of interest as understanding how this occurs aids in the design of better systems. Thus, in mononuclear systems stepped SCO is generally due to the presence of independent metal centres which undergo SCO at different temperatures.…”
