Two types of fucoxanthin-chlorophyll-binding proteins I tightly bound to the photosystem I core complex in marine centric diatoms

Abstract: Intact fucoxanthin (Fucox)-chlorophyll (Chl)-binding protein I-photosystem I supercomplexes (FCPI-PSIs) were prepared by a newly developed simple fast procedure from centric diatoms Chaetoceros gracilis and Thalassiosira pseudonana to study the mechanism of their efficient solar energy accumulation. FCPI-PSI purified from C. gracilis contained 252 Chl a, 23 Chl c, 56 Fucox, 34 diadinoxanthin+diatoxanthin, 1 violaxanthin, 21 ß-carotene, and 2 menaquinone-4 per P700. The complex showed a high electron transfer a… Show more

“…Indeed, the protein abundance of 55% of the 29 LHCs changed significantly under low Cu (Tables 1 and 2). As shown in the phylogenetic tree (Fig 5, summarized in Table 2), the down-regulated proteins are phylogenetically related to known LHCs that are particularly involved in light harvesting reactions in both PSII [87] and PSI [89,90]. Of the 9 up-regulated LHCs, four are part of Lhcf-group III, which is most closely related to the major Lhcf cluster in the haptophyte Emiliania [54].…”

“…Percentage of each functional category is represented in the total numbers of differentially expressed transcripts from each individual set of data. Martino et al, 2000;Beer et al, 2006;Lepetit et al, 2007;Ikeda et al, 2013). A third group, LHCSR or LHCX, instead consists of antennas involved in photoprotection and stress response in several algae species and mosses (Richard et al, 2000;Peers et al, 2009;Alboresi et al, 2010;Zhu and Green, 2010).…”

“…The result that the FCP complex with its simple composition accounted for more than 60 % of total Chl a is interesting, considering that there are at least 30 genes related to the light-harvesting function in diatoms (Armbrust et al 2004;Bowler et al 2008). This contrasted with photosystem I purified from C. gracilis, which was associated with a wide variety of FCP-related polypeptides (Ikeda et al 2008(Ikeda et al , 2013.…”
