Two-year results of interspinous spacer (X-Stop) implantation in 175 patients with neurologic intermittent claudication due to lumbar spinal stenosis

Abstract: The clinical outcome of patients with symptomatic lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) was assessed during a follow-up period of 2 years after X-Stop implantation. The X-Stop is the most commonly used interspinous distraction device in patients with neurogenic intermittent claudication due to LSS. Between 2003 and 2007, more than 1,000 patients were examined in our centre with symptoms of intermittent claudication due to spinal stenosis. Between February 2003 and June 2007, in 175 of these patients an X-Stop device wa… Show more

“…Fracture rates, and the means of detecting fractures, vary between studies, making direct comparisons difficult. The rate of 7 % overall (including 2 % reported by the surgeons) in this study was less than has been reported in a similar study of other IPDs (29 %) [15], but is higher than in other studies where no central analysis of X-rays was undertaken [15,16].…”

“…For such a procedure, spinous process distractors are becoming increasingly popular, particularly in the lumbar spine. 16,23,25,30 Intervertebral body distractors are also commonly used after disc material resection or corpectomy. 27 Our technique results in simultaneous distraction of the spinous processes and vertebral bodies.…”
