Two Years after Pandemic Influenza A/2009/H1N1: What Have We Learned?

Abstract: SUMMARY The world had been anticipating another influenza pandemic since the last one in 1968. The pandemic influenza A H1N1 2009 virus (A/2009/H1N1) finally arrived, causing the first pandemic influenza of the new millennium, which has affected over 214 countries and caused over 18,449 deaths. Because of the persistent threat from the A/H5N1 virus since 1997 and the outbreak of the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) coronavirus in 2003, medical and scientific communities have been more prepare… Show more

“…In addition, the guidelines of the WHO recommend early treatment with oseltamivir for suspected influenza cases and warn that delayed medical attention increases the mortality rate [20]. In our study, 89.6% of patients did not use osaltamivir prior to admission, whereas only 10.35% of them used this medication.…”

Influenza B virus infection also has similar clinical characteristics and severity as seasonal influenza A virus infection (Su et al, 2014).…”

“…The effectiveness of neuraminidase inhibitors has been evaluated in several meta-analyses, but authors differed in their conclusions (Dobson et al, 2015;Jefferson et al, 2014;Muthuri et al, 2014). Furthermore, there is an increasing number of viral isolates resistant to neuraminidase inhibitors, and resistance can emerge during treatment (Cheng et al, 2012;Takashita et al, 2015;. Adamantanes are active against influenza A virus only, but are now rarely used because of resistance (Cheng et al, 2012).…”

“…The pH1N1 virus rapidly infected over 40z of the susceptible population and became endemic by replacing the previously circulating human seasonal H1N1 virus (1). This occurred despite extensive preparations for the pandemic worldwide and readily available molecular diagnostics (2).…”
