Abstract

The ponyfishes are a small group of fish in the family Leiognathidae, commonly known as slipmouths. They are found mostly in marine and brackish water habitats in tropical and subtropical regions (Qamar et al., 2017). Depending on such morphological features as mouth structure and jaw teeth, ponyfishes are divided into three genera: Gazza, Leiognathus and Secutor (Kimura et al., 2008).The genus Nuchequula Whitley 1932 was established as a subgenus of Eubleekeria Fowler 1904 [synonymized under Leiognathus by James (1978], being characterized by a distinct dark blotch on the nape and a deep body.
