Types of carbonate platforms: a genetic approach

Abstract: Many types of carbonate platforms have been described, from homoclinal ramps to rimmed shelves and a full spectrum of variations in between; the distinction between these different types can be problematic. Nevertheless, classification of carbonate platforms is not just a semantic or academic issue. For example, it is clearly important for the accurate interpretation of seismic images of facies geometry and for assessing the potential of stratigraphic traps. Even though predictive efficiency of conceptual mode… Show more

“…Trophic conditions, temperature, and water energy determine the biotic associations (e.g., Hallock and Schlager 1986). Type and location of the carbonate production determine the base level of sediment accumulation and thus the platform morphology and dynamics (Pomar 2001b). Lees and Buller (1972) and Lees (1975) already emphasized that modern foramol sediments are not restricted to extratropical areas but occur also in the tropics and subtropics (Fig.…”

“…were found in the APS-1 unit, a basal level of the Santiago Formation. This unit is composed by limestone with intercalations of calcareous sandstone and contains a varied fossil association, mainly constituted of photic-independent biota (bryozoans, brachiopods and crinoids) (Pomar, 2001). These taxa were preserved as disarticulated calcified specimens.…”
