Types of Non-kin Networks and Their Association With Survival in Late Adulthood: A Latent Class Approach

Abstract: Objectives: Integration into social networks is an important determinant of health and survival in late adulthood. We first identify different types of non-kin networks among older adults and second, investigate the association of these types with survival rates. Method: Official register information on mortality is combined with data from the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam (LASA). The sample includes 2,440 Dutch respondents aged 54-85 at baseline in 1992 and six follow-ups covering a time span of 20 years… Show more

“…Thus, the advantage of LCA compared to traditional cluster analysis is the explorative approach without prior assumptions. The LCA approach is based on detecting patterns based on probabilities and not on distance measures like traditional cluster analysis (Ellwardt et al 2016). Finally, linear and logistic regressions were used to investigate the preferences regarding the working conditions of a potential future post-retirement employment of the 744 respondents.…”

“…Proximity is the number of social network members who live within a radius of 5 km (0–7). Following Ellwardt, Aartsen, and van Tilburg (2017), we recoded these three variables into “1 = low,” “2 = medium,” and “3 = high” using tertiles for the LCA. Composition captures the degree to which the social network is defined on the basis of ascribed ties such as kin, or ties based on choice such as friends.…”

“…This is agreed with a great number of studies. 27,75,76 But comparing with FA and kin support, community support and N-social support have less and indirect effect on family adaptation. The similar result was reported before as well.…”
