Typhloplanoida (Platyhelminthes, Rhabdocoela) from New Caledonia and eastern Australia, with the description of six new taxa

Abstract: Thirteen species of Typhloplanoida from the Australian east coast and New Caledonia are reported, six of them new to science. Three of these new species are representatives of the Promesostomidae: Coronhelmis cuypersi new species, Coronhelmis novaecaledoniae new species, and Kymocarens kanakorum new species. Austradenopharynx reynaertsi new genus and species is a member of the Solenopharyngidae. Two species are placed within the Typhloplanidae: Kaitalugia lydieae new genus and species and K. falcata new specie… Show more

“…Discussion The lack of a proximal tubiform part of the stylet ("manschette") combines C. inaequalis with C. exiguus Ax, 1994 and C. inornatus Ehlers, 1974 and separates these 3 species from all other ones of the genus (see Table 1 in [87]. So far, C. inaequalis is the only species of the genus with differently shaped stylet spines.…”

“…As Microvahine and Astrotorhynchus (Paramesostominae, Trigonostomidae) form a monophyletic clade with species of Promesostoma, we transfer Paramesostominae to Promesostomidae. Paramesostominae also includes Gandalfia Willems et al, 2005b, andParamesostoma Attems, 1896 (type genus), which were not included in the analysis. However, this is a homogeneous group of species characterised by several distinctive traits: The vitellaria are separated from the ovaries, the bursa possesses a double connection, the male sclerotised copulatory organ consists of a stylet, there is one extracapsular seminal vesicle, and the distal half of the pharynx is ciliated (Luther, 1948;Karling et al, 1972).…”
