CHAPEL'S (1997) EXPLORATION of developing international management communication competence provides an interesting theoretical perspective on knowledge acquisition. It is also essential to help postgraduate students develop applicable knowledge through research in industry. Can Chapel's approach be applied to this task? This research question underlies the discussion in this article, which uses schema theory to help illustrate the process of knowledge building in the teaching of intercultural business communication.The Knowledge-based Approach Knowledge building is a gradual and accumulative process (Chapel, 1997), one that can be examined through schema theory, which enables examination of knowledge structures and gaps.
