“…The TS consists of higher grade sillimanite-bearing gneisses and micaschists, garnet-and biotite-bearing amphibolites, marbles and pegmatites (Bonsignore and Ragni, 1966;Venzo et al, 1971;Gazzola et al, 2000;Spalla et al, 2005). Several post-Variscan acidic and basic intrusives (granitoids, diorites and minor gabbros) occur in both units (Knig, 1964;Ragni, 1966, 1968;Venzo et al, 1971;Del Moro et al, 1981;Bockemhl and Pfister, 1985;Tribuzio et al, 1999;Petri et al, 2017). The mineral ages of these igneous rocks span over two time intervals: the first ranges from 300 to 260 Ma (white mica and biotite Rb/Sr; plagioclase and amphibole Rb/Sr and Sm/Nd; zircon U/Pb) and has been interpreted as igneous cooling ages, and the second ranges from 125 to 78…”

“…One major characteristic feature of the Western European lithosphere is the existence of widespread magmatic intrusions and underplating of the continental crust (Figures c and d; Bois et al, ; Rey, ; Schuster & Stüwe, ), which occurred during late stages and after the orogenic collapse of the Variscan orogen (Petri et al, ). In contrast, the continental margins of Norway and Greenland do not show evidence for prerift underplating, and no significant postorogenic magmatic activity is recorded north of the Elbe lineament during Permian times (Figure c; Fossen et al, ; Meissner, ).…”
