UAV photogrammetry for road surface modelling

Abstract: Recently, the interest of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle application in photogrammetric environment for roads observation and monitoring has increased in many countries, in Lithuania as well. The experimental object for demonstration of capability and efficiency of aerial vehicle-based remote sensing technology for road data collection was a western bypass of Vilnius. The platform of the model UX5 Trimble with mounted camera Sony NEX-5R was applied for gaining images. The implemented means are mobile and not expensiv… Show more

“…The UAV used in this study was a DJI Phantom 4 RTK (P4RTK), which is an accurate low-altitude UAV platform used in many fields (Biçici and Zeybek, 2021;Nex and Remondino, 2013;Ruzgiene et al 2015). This device was preferred because of its advantages, such as appealing to the end-user, ease of planning, durability, and compactness.…”

“…Finally, we collected 34, uniformly distributed, Ground Control Points to co-register the photogrammetry outputs (3D model, DSM and Orthomosaic) to the WGS84/UTM35 reference system (e.g., [59,60]). This task was performed using Emlid Reach RS© single frequency receivers in RTK configuration (with centimeter-level accuracy), expecting centimetric accuracy (e.g., [61][62][63][64]).…”

“…During the last decades, many authors have tried assessing geosites by means of several criteria, such as representativeness, rarity and integrity [62,[74][75][76][77], and the degree of scientific knowledge regarding the geosite, attested by published scientific studies [78]. Representativeness is associated with the way in which a geosite may represent the types of geological processes (active or inactive) that can occur on Earth.…”

“…At that time it appeared to be unsuitable due to significant differences (about 2-5%) in observed dimensions. Research of Ruzgiene et al [15] shows that UAV photogrammetry may be even applied in monitoring road pavement condition. Nassar and Jung [16] presented possibility of SfM application to the earthworks planning.…”
