We discuss some families of integral positive ternary quadratic forms. Our main example is f (x, y, z) = x 2 + y 2 + 16nz 2 , where n is positive, squarefree, and n = u 2 + v 2 with u, v ∈ Z. Der Verstorbene, dessen Lebensbild in den folgenden Zeilen zu skizzieren versucht wird, hatte das Gliick, bis zu seinem unerwarteten Tode am 9. Oktober 1954 im Kreise seiner Familie, seiner Schiiler und Kollegen wirken zu diirfen. G-eboren am 8. November 1886 als Sohn des Volksschulrektors Heinrich Brandt in Feudingen in Westfalen, folgte er zuniichst seinem Vater i m Beruf. Indessen iibte er das Amt eines Volksschullehrers nur 14Monate lang aus. Nach Ablegung der Reifepriifung im Jahre 1909 studierte er in Gottingen und StraBburg, wo er 1912 bei Heinrich Weber promovierte. Ein Jahr spiiter wurde er Assistent an der Technischen Hochschule Karlsruhe. Seine wissenschaftliche Laufbahn wurde durch den Krieg nur kurz unterbrochen, da er schon kurz nach Ausbruch der Kiimpfe 1914 schwer verwundet und nach der Cesundung als nicht mehr diensttauglich entlassen wurde. I m Jahre 1917 habilitierte er sich in Karlsruhe fur das Fach der Mathematik und Mechanik, wurde 1920 als ordentlicher Professor fur darstellende Geometrie und angewandte Mathematik an die Technische Hochschule Aachen berufen und folgte endlich 1930 einem Ruf nach Halle als Nachfolger Hassea. Hier wirkte er bis zu seinem Ende, viele Jahre hindurch als Dekan der MathematischNaturwissenschBftlichen Fakultiit. Die Deutsche Akademie der Naturforscher in Halle (Leopoldina), deren Vizepriisident er 1952 wurde, sowie die Siichsische Akademie der Wissenschaften wahlten ihn zum Mitglied. Jahrzehntelang gehorte er neben anderen wissenschattlichen Vereinigungen der Deutschen Mathematikervereinigung an, deren Jahresbericht er seit 1945 herausgab. Der auBeren Erscheinung nach war Heinrich Brandt eine Verkorperung der Eigenschaften, die man dem Volksschlag seiner Heimat nachsagt : sicher, treu, gerecht im Urteil, Konzessionen abgeneigt. Seinen Schiilern, zu denen der Verfasser dieser Zeilen in den Jahren 1932-1937 gehoren durfte, war er gleichzeitig Vorbild wie Beschiitzer. Seinem Lehrberuf hat er sich mit grol3em FleiB hingegeben. Dabei war er kein gliinzender Redner, seine starke personliche Auspragung machte es ihm vielmehr oft recht schwer, den Zugang zum Verstiindnis seiner Horer zu finden. Doch erfuhr der padagogische Eros, der mehr wollte, als bloBes Fachwissen zu vermitteln, bei denen, die tiefer blickten, dankbare Anerkennung. Neben den regelmiil3ig wiederkehrenden Kursusvorlesungen, die er an der mit Lehrkriiften stets schwach besetzten Universitiit Halle immer wieder halten muBte, fend er doch meistens Zeit zu Sondervorlesungen aller Art, selbst iiber Themen, die, wie die Theorie der mathematischen Spiele, seinem engeren Fachgebiet fern lagen. Es verdient hervorgehoben zu werden, daB Brandt nicht in seinem Berufe und in seinem wissenschaftlichen Fache aufgipg. Seine Mitgliedschft in den Msth. Kaohr. 1956, Bd. IS, H. 6 21
