Über das schädliche Auftreten der Diprion‐ Arten (Hym., Diprionidae) in finnischen Kiefernbeständen in diesem Jahrhundert

Abstract: Summary A report is given on the occurence of mass outbreaks of Diprion species in Finland between 1897–1962. Diprion sertifer appears locally at intervals from 5–6 years; heavy outbreaks occured with approximately 30 years intervals in 1897, 1932–33 and 1960–62. D. pini shows usually localised outbreaks, scattered over the whole country. There exists in both species an ecologically and climatically well definid centre of outbreaks, which is of larger extension in D. sertifer than in D. pini.

“…1). Published records of D. pini outbreaks in Finland date back as far as 1866 (Kangas, 1963), and yearly observations of forest insect damage have been carried out in Finland from 1894 onwards (Kangas, 1963). Given Finland’s long history of inventorying its forests (Kangas, 1963; Nyyssönen, 1997; Sevola, 2000), it is obvious that no D. pini outbreaks of the same magnitude as the one recently observed have occurred in the Finnish forests in the past century and a half because such an event would have undoubtedly been documented.…”

“…There are eleven sympatric pine sawfly species in Northern Europe feeding on Scots pine (Kontuniemi 1960). Out of them, outbreaks by five species have been recorded in Finland (Kangas 1963). In here, defoliation by the larval stage of the two major pine sawfly species in Finland, the common pine sawfly, and the European pine sawfly are discussed.…”

“…This kind of pattern is characteristics for the common pine sawfly (Geri 1988). Kangas (1963) raised a possibility that the European pine sawfly may have a 30-year cycle in the regional outbreaks. However, this cyclic pattern has not been confirmed (Hanski 1987).…”

“…and Diprion pini L.) are a common problem in boreal pine forests of Northern Europe (Hanski 1987;Juutinen 1967;Kangas 1963;Larsson and Tenow 1984). The outbreaks of pine sawflies typically occur at irregular intervals (Juutinen 1967;Soubeyrand et al 2010), and they tend to be preceded by drought periods Tenow 1983, 1984).…”
