“…Although release of spindle cells from the fiber structure occurred first, the rapid decrease in the weight of insoluble residue indicated that the spindle cells were also decomposed by the organism. Spindle cells constitute about 90 per cent of the weight of wool fibers, and possess the same properties of insolubility and enzymatic resistance as do the intact fibers (El6d and Zahn, 1944). From a study of the effects of pH, concentration of salts in the medium, temperature, and aeration on the digestion of wool by S. fradiae strain 3739, it was found that the latent period could be greatly shortened by selection of the proper environmental conditions.…”
