Ubuntu Ethics

Abstract

This entry gives the reader some understanding of ubuntu as a moral theory. It begins by providing the reader with a brief exposition of an African metaphysical system informing ubuntu. It proceeds to familiarize the reader with the metaethical debate regarding ethical naturalism and supernaturalism in relation to ubuntu. Next, the four salient interpretations of ubuntu in the literature are considered. This entry also offers the reader a rough sense of applied ethics in the light of ubuntu. It concludes by considering some criticisms against ubuntu.
