Ulcerative colitis with Guillain–Barré syndrome

Abstract: Rationale:Ulcerative colitis is a chronic and recurrent inflammatory disease involving the intestine. It is reported that about 40% of patients with ulcerative colitis have extraintestinal manifestations, where as the literature on neurological involvement as extraintestinal manifestation is rather limited. Guillain-Barré syndrome is an abnormal immune-mediated and acute-acquired demyelinating disease that mainly affects the peripheral nervous system and often has a phenomenon of protein-cell separation of cer… Show more

“…The association between UC and GBS is well documented, although it is not well understood why UC patients are at increased risk of developing GBS (6)(7)(8). The onset of GBS in this case report was characterized by lower extremity weakness and numbness of the upper extremities, which is consistent with the typical symptoms of GBS.…”

“…Guillain–Barré Syndrome is one form of neurological manifestations which can occur both in remission or a relapse of Ulcerative Colitis[ 10 ]. The exact pathogenesis of Ulcerative Colitis with Guillain–Barré Syndrome is unclear. It may be related to the following factors: Ulcerative Colitis-associated vasculitis, post infection immunity, malnutrition, toxic metabolites, vitamin deficiency, and thrombotic disease[ 11 ]. It is also postulated that since both Ulcerative Colitis and Guillain–Barré Syndrome are autoimmune diseases there may be similar autoimmune mechanisms in the development of both these diseases.…”

“…The culture of brucellosis and the detection of specific antibodies in the cerebrospinal fluid is the direct or indirect evidence for the diagnosis of neurobrucellosis [ 3 , 4 ]. Guillain–Barre syndrome (GBS) is an immune-mediated peripheral neuropathy that is often induced by viruses and Campylobacter jejuni [ 5 ]. The primary lesion is a segmental demyelination of motor and sensory nerves in multiple nerve roots and peripheral nerves, however, brucella-induced GBS is very rare.…”
