Ulcerative Eosinophilic Granuloma of the Tongue: A Light- and Electron-microscopic Study

Abstract: Ulcerative eosinophilic granuloma of the tongue simulates histiocytosis X or cancerous lesions, and may be subjected to unnecessary excessive treatment. This case report illustrates its benign, self-limited nature, discussed the differential diagnosis, and postulates its pathogenesis on the basis of light- and electron-microscopic findings.

“…As this disorder is of great interest for several medical specialties, such as dermatologists, otolaryngologists and dentists, various daunting terms have been used to characterize this disorder. These include, ulcerated granuloma eosinophilicum diutinum of the tongue [1], a term that has been abandoned, EU [2,3,4,5,6], traumatic granuloma [7,8], eosinophilic granuloma [9,10], traumatic eosinophilic granuloma [11,12], ulcerative eosinophilic granuloma [13,14], traumatic ulcerative granuloma with stromal eosinophilia [15,16], traumatic eosinophilic ulcer [17,18], and a combination of these. Adding to this list, identical clinical features exclusively seen in nursing infants are known as Riga-Fede disease [19].…”

“…However, according to Goho 20 the most appropriate descriptive term is sublingual neonatal traumatic ulcer. Tang et al 21 proposed that viral and toxic agents introduced to the submucosa, by means of trauma and mucosal damage, can cause inflammatory reaction and tissue loss.…”
