Ultra-broadband and compact polarization splitter based on gold filled dual-core photonic crystal fiber

Abstract: A polarization splitter based on gold filled dual-core photonic crystal fiber (DC-PCF) that can work from 1420 nm to 1980 nm (560 nm bandwidth) is proposed in this work. The splitter has an extinction ratio lower than −20 dB over a large bandwidth with a total length of 254.6 μm. The key principle of operation of the splitter is the induced change in the refractive index of the y-odd mode when it is coupled to the second order plasmonic mode, while other supermodes are weakly affected by the plasmonic mode. “…The above reported SPR sensors are designed in a single core. However, the matured stack-and-draw fabrication technology makes it easier for fabricating multi-core PCFs, since multi-core PCFs including dual-core (DC) PCFs have exposed outstanding performances in different areas of applications, such as polarization splitter, polarization filter, and refractive index (RI) sensors [13][14][15]. After all, a number of dual core PCF biosensors were also reported in [16][17][18].…”

“…Since the first photonic crystal fiber (PCF) was fabricated by Russell et al in 1996 [ 1 ], PCFs have been investigated extensively and applied in different optical fields, such as fiber laser, sensing, optical communication, and so on [ 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 ]. At present, the PCF-based optical devices, including polarization beam splitter (PBS), polarization filter, modulator, etc., have become the indispensable components in the all-fiber optical systems [ 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 ].…”

“…Many investigations on the combination of the PCF and SPR effect for the optical devices have been reported [24][25][26][27][28]. Until now, researchers have designed some DC-PCF PBSs based on the mode coupling between the core mode of the DC-PCF and surface plasmon polariton (SPP) mode [29][30][31][32][33]. In 2019, Rahman et al demonstrated a kind of DC-PCF PBS with the gold wire filled in the air hole, where the fiber length was only 56.33 μm and bandwidth was up to 530 nm [34].…”
