Ultra-dehydration of a reactive epichlorohydrin-containing organic mixture using a defect-free thin carbon molecular sieve composite membrane

Abstract: A high-performance thin carbon molecular sieve (CMS) composite membrane was prepared using a drop-coating process for dehydration of a ternary mixture (water/IPA/ECH) by a pervaporation process.

“…Epichlorohydrin (ECH) is a hazardous substance that contains chlorinated epoxy moiety [ 1 , 2 ], and isopropanol (IPA) is commonly used as a solvent in the epoxy resin manufacturing process. The water produced during synthesis forms an azeotropic ternary mixture with ECH and IPA [ 3 , 4 ]. Therefore, recycling (mainly dehydrating) this hazardous mixture is crucial for increasing product competitiveness in an environmentally friendly manner.…”

“…18,19 In addition, in the process of high-temperature degradation, this method is widely used in the pore-forming process due to the emission of gas products. [20][21][22] In previous work, we reported a composite electrode material 10 based on the functional PI materials as the substrate, carbon black (CB), carbon fiber and aramid fiber (AF), which also has fiber structure and high toughness as the enhancer. The synergistic effect between CB, AF and PI, the π-π interaction between the nanofiller and the organic polymer material, and the well dispersed in the matrix make the ternary composite have higher transmission rate of electrolyte ions and electrons, also the excellent long-term stability.…”

“…Depending upon their molecular weight, epoxy resins exist in solid or liquid forms, and the molecular weight of epoxy is generally controlled by adding stoichiometric excesses of epichlorohydrin and IPA during the reaction. As a result of epoxy synthesis reaction, water, a series of chorine‐containing impurities, ECH, and IPA are found combined with an epoxy product at the end of the reaction 3 . Generally, simple distillation is used to facilitate the removal of chorine‐containing impurities.…”

“…As a result of epoxy synthesis reaction, water, a series of chorine-containing impurities, ECH, and IPA are found combined with an epoxy product at the end of the reaction. 3 Generally, simple distillation is used to facilitate the removal of chorinecontaining impurities. However, ECH, IPA, and water form a ternary azeotrope at a composition of 50/30/20 (%, w/w) that interferes with the products' purification and the precursors' reuse.…”
