Ultra-High-Capacity Passive Optical Network Systems with Free-Space Optical Communications

Abstract: This article experimentally demonstrates a hybrid fiber-free-space passive optical network that enables high spectral density, aggregated capacity, and total throughput through ultra-dense wavelength-division multiplexing baseband and radioover-fiber channels. Ultra-dense wavelength-division multiplexing 10-Gb/s Nyquistshaped 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation, 10-Gb/s radio-over-fiber orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing, and 8.75-Gb/s baseband orthogonal frequencydivision multiplexing signals per u… Show more

“…The 32 Â 40 Gb/s WDM FSO over 200 m [39] and 16 Â 100 Gb/s PDM-QPSK in 80 m building to building FSO have been demonstrated in [40]. Coherent UDWDM can fully utilize the bandwidth and increase the transmission capacity of an FSO link [41][42][43].…”

“…There were only a few researches on FSO-PON in the previous works. Most studies concluded by investigating an identical protocol to develop a media access control (MAC) layer of the fixed bandwidth allocation (FBA) and dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) [17][18][19]. The previous works [9,10] demonstrated only a point-to-point (PtP) traffic scheme for FSO transmission without analysis of atmospheric turbulences.…”

“…This paper focused on the evaluation of a proposed OOFDM system for its application over a free space link to provide high-speed indoor communications. For example, dual polarization phase state modulation in combination with wavelength multiplexing techniques has been demonstrated over FSO for 16 x 100 Gbit/s high capacity optical metro and access networks [4], [8]. In this paper, we focus on the demonstration of high-speed radio over FSO system with a low cost solution based on IM-DD for indoor communications environments.…”
