Ultrafast all-optical switching demonstrated on bacteriorhodopsin and photoactive yellow protein films

Abstract: We determined the nonlinear refractive indices of bR and PYP films and achieved ultrafast all-optical switching in both materials. The PYP films exhibited sub-200-fs rise and 420-fs decay times nominally enabling >> 100-GHz modulation speeds.
