Ultrafast Carrier Dynamics in Exfoliated and Functionalized Calcium Niobate Nanosheets in Water and Methanol

Abstract: We have characterized the initial charge carrier trapping and recombination processes in suspensions of exfoliated calcium niobate nanosheets derived from the Dion Jacobsen phase KCa 2 Nb 3 O 10 . Niobate nanosheets have previously been found to catalyze hydrogen generation in photochemical water-splitting reactions. Photogenerated charge carriers relaxed with second-order kinetics on a sub-nanosecond time scale that depended on the nanosheet size. Methanol was used as a sacrificial electron donor to separate … Show more

“…5,12,[24][25][26][27][28] As we reported before, dispersions of individual nanosheets are able to evolve H 2 from water under UV light, but no oxygen. [29][30][31] We now find that hydrogen evolution with the niobate sheets is coupled with stoichiometric formation of peroxide, according to eq 2. This peroxide does not form via reduction of O 2 (eq 3), since irradiation experiments conducted in the presence of O 2 mostly lead to free H 2 O 2 and only to small amounts of coordinated peroxide.…”

“…On the basis of transient absorption spectroscopy, photogenerated charge carriers in the sheets recombine on a subnanosecond time scale following second-order kinetics. 16 In extension of our previous work on Ca 2 2 ) that are supported by γ-aminoalkyltrimethoxysilanes as organic linkers. Platinum nanoparticles are commonly employed as a cocatalysts for water reduction, 5 and IrO 2 is one of the most active water oxidation catalysts.…”

“…The dispersed-probe transient absorption setup was constructed from an amplified Ti:sapphire laser system (Spectra Physics Spitfire Pro + Tsunami) operating at 1 kHz, which produced 2.25 mJ pulses of 800 nm fundamental output with a 40 fs (full width at half-maximum) duration. 49 The 800 nm fundamental pulse train from the amplifier was split into multiple paths. One path generated the dispersed white-light probe continuum (440−750 nm) by focusing the laser pulses into a slowly translating CaF 2 crystal.…”
