Ultrafast Growth of h-MoO3 Microrods and Its Acetone Sensing Performance

Abstract: Hexagonal molybdenum trioxide (h-MoO3) was synthesized by microwave-assisted hydrothermal method, allowing an ultrafast growth of unidimensional microrods with well-faceted morphology. The crystalline structure of this metastable phase was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that hexagonal microrods can be obtained in one minute with well-defined exposed facets and the fine control of morphology. Sensing tests of the acetone biomarker revealed … Show more

“…The yield profiles of FU, 5-HMF and levulinic acid are reported in Figure 4. Under neutral conditions, FU and 5-HMF yields gradually increase, reaching the highest value at 180 • C. The observed decrease in the production of furans at higher reaction temperatures is in line with other reports [46] and can be related to the formation of humin type by-products. Indeed, dark-brown insoluble products were formed in experiments carried out at 240 • C and 300 • C. As expected, under the reaction conditions adopted very low concentrations of levulinic acid (LA) were registered in all investigated reaction temperatures.…”

“…By fitting the sensor response with a logarithmic function Y = 1.28 + 0.13logX (R 2 = 0.99) it is evident how the slope of the curve is greater than the response of diacetyl in water solution. From the fit it is possible to extract the lower detection limit (LDL), the minimum concentration of gas detectable by gas sensor [45,46].…”

“…The redox peaks in the CVs indicate the stored charges, which could be associated with faradaic redox reactions 50 and also showing a better interconnected network with good porosity, thereby leading to better mobilization of ions. 51 The CV of WO 3 at a scan rate of 200 mV s −1 (Fig. S1, ESI†) shows an oxidation peak at 0.44 V (0.019 mA g −1 ) and a reduction peak at 0.21 V (−0.015 mA g −1 ), while the CV of WO 3 –MgO (Fig.…”
