Ultrafast Remote Healing of Magneto-Responsive Thermoplastic Elastomer-Based Nanocomposites

Abstract: We describe herein, a general, efficient, and scalable process to design magneto-responsive thermoplastic elastomer-based (nano)composites that can be repeatedly healed in a few tens of seconds by triggering polymer melting upon exposure to a high-frequency magnetic field. Three series of composites loaded with 1–15 vol % of Fe3O4 nanoparticles, Fe nanoparticles, or Fe microparticles were produced and characterized in depth with the aim to identify the physical properties required for two applications: (1) ma… Show more

“…Other attempts were performed on a similar material loaded with Fe 3 O 4 NPs, but there again, the micrograph quality did not really allow us to properly characterize the particle dispersion . In addition, the use of SAXS does not provide much information here because of the high polydispersity of the Fe NPs we used; we refer the interested reader to our previous work where these measurements are provided as Supporting Information. In the same article, identical Fe NPs were used to reinforce a TPU matrix (observable with SEM and TEM) where some degree of aggregation was observed.…”
