Ultrafast synthesis of carbon quantum dots from fenugreek seeds using microwave plasma enhanced decomposition: application of C-QDs to grow fluorescent protein crystals

Abstract: Herein, we present the rapid synthesis of mono-dispersed carbon quantum dots (c-QDs) via a singlestep microwave plasma-enhanced decomposition (MpeD) process. Highly-crystalline c-QDs were synthesized in a matter of 5 min using the fenugreek seeds as a sustainable carbon source. It is the first report, to the best of our knowledge, where c-QDs were synthesized using MpeD via natural carbon precursor. Synthesis of c-QDs requires no external temperature other than hydrogen (H 2) plasma. plasma containing the high… Show more

“…A number of synthesis techniques have been adopted such as hydrothermal 18 , 23 , electrochemical 24 , 25 , sonochemical 26 , solvothermal 11 , 27 , 28 , laser ablation 29 , microwave cutting 30 , etc. Among these approaches, microwave treatment is indeed beneficial due to its uniform and rapid heating, thereby leading to extremely short reaction time 31 . The utilisation of microwave treatment has been reported for the rapid synthesis of GQDs 30 , 32 .…”

“…Thermal decomposition is one of the most preferable methods for the synthesis of CDs, which involves the carbonization or pyrolysis of the large-sized carbonaceous precursors under higher temperatures [104,132]. The benefits of using this method reside in the mass production of CDs, cost-effectiveness, lesser reaction time, broader tolerance of precursors, solvent-free strategies, and easy synthesis [104,133]. Additionally, by using the thermal method, fluorescent properties of CDs can be optimized by controlling parameters such as reaction-mix pH, reflux duration, and reaction temperatures [104,134].…”

“…The peculiar features of the GQDs obtained by this rapid synthesis were analyzed in vivo, evidencing the ability to significantly inhibit the enzyme acetylcholinesterase, and suggesting the possibility of exploiting GQDs in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. Dager et al [ 33 ] have recently performed a synthesis of graphene nanoparticles using a one-step decomposition process, enhanced by microwave plasma. In a recent bottom-up method, Wu et al [ 68 ] developed a synthetic alternative to GQDs for sensing applications by using microplasma, an innovative method in which the starting material is represented by fructose.…”
