Ultrarapid Multimode Microwave Synthesis of Nano/Submicron β-SiC

Abstract: This paper presents the design, development and realization of a fast and novel process for the synthesis of 3C silicon carbide (β-SiC) nanorods and submicron powder. Using SiO2 (or Si) and activated carbon (AC), this process allows β-SiC to be synthesized with almost 100% purity in timeframes of seconds or minutes using multimode microwave rotary tube reactors under open-air conditions. The synthesis temperature used was 1460 ± 50 °C for Si + AC and 1660 ± 50 °C for SiO2 + AC. The shortest β-SiC synthesis tim… Show more

“…S2, supplementary information). The presence of microrods in the microwave-assisted solid-state process without using structural templates was already reported for different materials, e.g., β-SiC 45 , and β-NaYF4. 46 It is attributed mainly to the particle growing mechanism that starts with the formation of nanocrystals leading to the micrometric structure in a swift process.…”

“…Thus, the choice of extractants plays a significant role in determining the efficiency of the microwave treatment. As reported, dimethyl carbonate represents a new generation of nontoxic solvent, exhibiting the characteristics of safety, convenience, less pollution, and diverse dissolution to organic compounds [14,15]. Thus, in this work, we investigated the effect of dimethyl carbonate as an extraction agent on the reduction rate of the organic matters under microwave irradiation.…”

“…low temperature of 93.4 °C, and the organic matters with high molecular weight were tightly attached to the sludge, so a higher energy is required to improve the extraction efficiency. As is well known, nanomaterials have a large specific surface area and many defects, thus, they exhibit high surface adsorption and microwave absorption [15][16][17][18][19], which leads to the increase in temperature around the nanomaterials.…”

“…FT-IR analysis showed the presence of characteristic peaks and further confirmed the occurrence of functionalization of the peptides on the nanoparticles. In SS4 , the presence of stretching vibration at 3384 cm -1 shows the presence of Si-OH, and the broad peak at 1088 cm -1 corresponds to the SiO stretching vibrations ( Zhao et al, 2018 ). The peak around at 693 cm -1 indicates stretching vibrations and has been assigned to Si-C; the C-H deformation vibrations at 2896 cm -1 , 1412 cm -1 , and 1271 cm -1 are due to the presence of the silsesquioxane structure ( Dìaz-Morales et al, 2006 ).…”
