Ultrashort Pulse Laser Material Processing

Abstract: The field of ultrashort pulsed lasers has grown dramatically over the past years. Besides many research topics, the industrial application, especially for laser material processing has focused around USP lasers. The success of USP lasers contributes to many economic branches. The advantages ranges from higher output power, shorter pulse duration, innovative amplifier systems to beam guidance. One question remains: Where is the potential for industrial applications of this technology? This article presents the … Show more

“…An optimum processing window around 1 J/cm 2 was found for steel. Glasses require higher fluences ranging up to ∼ 30 J/cm 2 [5]. However, in alternative sequential processing strategies it might be beneficial to increase the removal rate via much higher fluences in a first roughing step.…”

“…The focusing of ultrashort laser pulses allows the machining of a large variety of materials down to a microscopic scale [1][2][3]. Non-contact, cold ablation enables the processing and manufacturing of work pieces without altering the surrounding material through excessive energy input, either through heat or through mechanical influences.…”

“…In recent years, the study of short laser pulses has become a sustained and attractive topic in the field of laser due to its extensive applications, such as industrial processing [1,2], medical surgery [3,4], optical surveying [5,6], optical communication [7,8] and scientific research [9,10]. This short laser pulses having pulse duration from microsecond to femtosecond can be generated by utilizing the Q-switching or mode-locking technique.…”
