Ultrasonic-Assisted Extraction of the Botanical Dietary Supplement Resveratrol and Other Constituents of Polygonum cuspidatum

Abstract: The roots of Polygonum cuspidatum produce several phenolic compounds, including trans-resveratrol (1), trans-piceid (2), and emodin (3), and are a commercial source of the botanical dietary supplement 1. Ultrasonic-assisted extraction technology and conventional shaking extraction procedures were compared for the extraction of 1-3 from P. cuspidatum roots, using 50% ethanol as a food grade solvent. These compounds were extracted successfully, and their mass transfer coefficients were calculated by fitting the … Show more

“…Furthermore, different studies on the ultrasonic extraction of resveratrol indicate that the optimal extraction temperature is between 50 and 70°C. Hence, in this study the temperature was fixed at 60°C as recommended in the literature [3,14] The design of experiment (DOE) matrix was established with a Resolution (R) of V + (full factorial) and therefore the design did not suffer from confounding of the main effects and two-variable interaction effects and, furthermore, the two-variable interaction effects were not confounded with each other [15]. The total design matrix consisted of 8 (2 3 ) runs ( Fig.…”

“…This compound is synthesized by plants as a means of protection against pathogenic attack, environmental stress, UV irradiation, fungal infections [2], the effects of ozone, heavy metal ions, and changes in climate (extreme cold) [3]. This active compound has important properties such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, cardio-and neuro-protective, anti-aging, antitumor, and anticancer effects [4].…”
