Ultrasonic evaluation of the normal uterus in the neonate

Abstract: Using real-time ultrasound, a study was undertaken to evaluate the morphology of normal uterus in the neonate delivered at term. The uterus was visualized in 41 (89.1%) of the 46 neonates. The cervical volume (CE-V) was 3.65 +/- 1.36 cm3, the corporeal volume (CO-V) 1.18 +/- 0.42 cm3, and the CE-V was significantly larger than the CO-V (p less than 0.001). The uterine volume (U-V) was 4.83 +/- 1.57 cm3, and U-V showed a good correlation with birth weight (r = 0.42, p less than 0.01). The endometrial echo was c… Show more

“…Estes achados são concordantes com os estudos de Piiroinen e Kaihola 2 , Gross et al 4 , Orsini et al 5 , que relatam não haver mudanças significativas do tamanho do útero até o início da puberdade, época a partir da qual ele cresce de forma rápida e homogênea. Para a maioria dos autores, o crescimento uterino começa a partir dos 10 anos [5][6][7] .…”

“…The uterus and ovaries are evaluated ultrasonographically in female babies. The dimensions of the uterus are increased due to the hormones crossing from the mother through the placenta (35,36). The body of the uterus is more prominent compared to the cervix, the height of the uterus is 35 mm and the highest width is approximately 14 mm.…”

“…Ultrasonography has been considered to be useful in the differentiation between premature thelarche and central precocious puberty, as an adjuvant to LH level measurement, according to a recent consensus on the use of GnRH antagonists in children (14) . The main markers reported by such consensus were the following: apparent endometrium, that is highly specific (about 100% specificity), although with a not so good sensitivity (about 30-80%) (15) ; uterine length > 3.0-4.0 cm (depending on the age); and ovarian volume > 1.0 to 1.5 cm 3 , with sensitivity and specificity around 90% (9,10,16,17) . Table 1 is a summary of the main cut-offs utilized in the diagnosis of precocious puberty according to the age.…”
