Ultrasonic Phased Array Sparse TFM Imaging Based on Virtual Source and Phase Coherent Weighting

Abstract: Total focus method (TFM) is an ultrasonic phased array imaging method and has a larger dynamic focusing range and higher spatial resolution than traditional imaging methods. But TFM needs to process a large amount of data, resulting in a long imaging time, which greatly limits its application and development in the industrial field. The sparse method can improve the computing efficiency by reducing the amount of data, but the resolution and intensity of sparse image are very low. This paper proposes a virtual … Show more

“…Later, the synthetic aperture method of Virtual Source Aperture (VSA) was proposed. The VSA not only increases the processing speed exponentially, but also maintains good lateral resolution and signal-to-noise ratio by comparing the processing speed parameters of the FMC/TFM, the SATFM [63,64], and the VSA method [65]. The artificial defects of complex welding materials were detected and evaluated successfully using TFM [66][67][68], and the influence of thickness and material attenuation on volumetric inspection was researched using conventional and advanced TFM-based ultrasonic arrays [69].…”

“…Firstly, it is necessary to have a basic understanding of Total Focusing Method (TFM) ultrasound imaging. This algorithm is based on full matrix capture (FMC), and if the phased array probe has N elements, a total of N × N transmit and receive operations need to be completed [90][91][92]. This means that the ultrasound is first transmitted by element 1, and all elements receive the signals.…”
