Ultrasonic Tenotomy and Debridement for Calcific Tendinopathy of the Shoulder: A Pilot Case Series

Abstract: Calcific tendinopathy of the rotator cuff is a common cause of shoulder pain and debility. Minimally invasive treatment options have been employed for management; however, ultrasonic tenotomy has not been previously described for management of calcific tendinopathy of the shoulder. The purpose of the current case series was to provide preliminary evidence in support of a novel treatment modality for calcific tendinopathy of the rotator cuff. This descriptive pilot case series included a total of 8 patients wit… Show more

“…Despite this, there is still a gradual loss of bone density with age. The effect of exercise on bone health is dependent upon exercise type 62,63 . Load‐based exercise, including Olympic‐style lifting or sprinting, 62,63 may mitigate bone density loss more effectively than endurance‐based exercise, such as long‐distance running or cycling.…”

Load‐based exercise, including Olympic‐style lifting or sprinting, 62,63 may mitigate bone density loss more effectively than endurance‐based exercise, such as long‐distance running or cycling. Based on this, current guidelines suggest weight‐bearing resistance activities 2–3 times per week for 30–60 minutes to aid in bone mineral density maintenance 64 …”

“…This percutaneous ultrasonic barbotage (PUB) procedure has only been recently described. 13 The PUB procedure uses ultrasonic energy to fragment the calcification and simultaneously flush the deposit with saline, facilitating aspiration of the deposit 14 The literature on PUB for calcific RC tendinopathy is limited, and only includes a small case series. 13 Furthermore, there has been no research to date that has compared the efficacy of PUB with other invasive treatments.…”
