Ultrasonication-assisted spray ionization mass spectrometry for the analysis of biomolecules in solution

Abstract: In this paper, we describe a novel technique-ultrasonication-assisted spray ionization (UASI)-for the generation of singly charged and multiply charged gas-phase ions of biomolecules (e.g., amino acids, peptides, and proteins) from solution; this method employs a low-frequency ultrasonicator (ca. 40 kHz) in place of the high electric field required for electrospray ionization. When a capillary inlet is immersed into a sample solution within a vial subjected to ultrasonication, the solution is continually direc… Show more

“…After visible light irradiation for 50 min, the adsorption peak at about 466 nm almost disappears, owing to the demethylation and hydroxylation of MO during the photocatalytic process. 23 Meanwhile, no new adsorption peaks appear and no obvious hypsochromic shift are observed, indicating the degradation of MO solution. Figure 4 shows the relationship between irradiation time and photodegradation efficiency of MO solution with Cu/Cu 2 O NCs under visible light irradiation.…”

“…80,81) Chen's group employed an ultrasonicator available in almost all the chemical laboratories to develop a new ionization method, so called as ultrasonication-assisted spray ionization (UASI). 82) A tapered capillary was used to drive solutions from a vial, positioned within an ultrasonicator to the MS ori ce. e ultrasonication not only acts as the driving force to push the sample solution through the capillary to the outlet, but also as the energy source for the phase transition of analytes from liquid phase to gas-phase.…”

“…Broad area EDAX analysis confirms the MO is a complex organic molecule that is often used as a textile dying agent. MO has been chosen as a standard model-dye to verify the photocatalytic performance of various synthesized catalysts since its degradation using different photocatalysts have been well researched and its degradation products are well characterized [26][27][28][29]. The effect of catalyst loading on the photo-conversion of the MO was examined at a dye concentration of 10 M. 5 mL aliquots of the dye were removed from the slurry reactor and the absorbance was checked at regular time intervals.…”
