Ultrasonographic appearances of gastric cancer

Abstract: In 32 patients with known gastric cancer involving different segments of the stomach, an attempt was made to image the tumour by ultrasonography. Identification of the lesion was possible in 31/32 cases. The tumour always appeared as a focal or diffuse thickening of the gastric wall, with irregular outer margins and luminal echoes; in many cases, a "target" pattern was seen. Although ultrasonography cannot be considered a sensitive test in the diagnosis of gastric cancer, knowledge of the possible appearances … Show more

“…As shown in healthy subjects and in gastric cancer patients, the antrum and anterior wall of the gastric body can be visualized in the majority of cases, whereas the posterior wall of the gastric body and fundus are "difficult" areas (the stomach was not distended with water in these studies) [22,23]. In the present study, the visualization rate for tumors located in the gastric body (84 %) was somewhat higher than for tumors of the antrum (67 %) and fundus/cardia (46 %).…”

“…Visualisation of the stomach can be improved by using a water load. [6] The appearance of the small bowel on sonography depends not only on the structure of the individual segment, but also more importantly on its contents and degree of distension. The bowel may be collapsed, containing only a small amount of mucus or may contain fluid or gas.…”
