Ultrasonographic findings in gastric cancer: In vitro and in vivo studies

Abstract: Ultrasonography was performed in 45 cases of gastric cancer. Specimens from all 45 cases of gastric cancer were subjects to ultrasonographic study by the water immersion method for comparison with histology. In 32 of these 45 cases in vivo ultrasonographic evaluation was performed prospectively. The overall accuracy rates for the diagnosis of the depth of cancerous invasion were almost 80% in both in vitro and in vivo studies. In vivo ultrasonographic findings agreed well with those from the specimen studies. … Show more

“…Loss of mural stratification is a sign of gastric wall disease and can be attributed to wall oedema or an infiltrative process. This is known to be a sign of malignancy, which is supported by multiple studies [7,[9][10][11][12][13][14][15]17,18].…”

“…[Table /Fig In the present study, the authors were able to detect all cases of Antropyloric malignancy as this region is easily visualised on TA-USG, especially with the use of fluid-filled techniques. However, the authors encountered challenges in imaging lesions of the posterior wall of the stomach, GE junction, fundus, and cardia [Table /Fig , [14][15][16].…”

“…High sensitivity and high penetration power are the key advantages of WIUS [23]. WIUS has successfully been used to describe the US features of gastric carcinoma [24] and the intestine [14,15]. WIUS can directly scan tissues shortly after gastrointestinal tract resection, providing a clear image that avoids the possibility of errors caused by inexperienced examiners.…”

“…US, as an imaging procedure of the extent of gastric tumors, has been a topic of major interest in the last decade, and sonographic characteristics of the normal as well as fibrotic and malignant changes of the stomach wall were described previously [12,13,. Ultrasonographically, normal stomach wall appears as five deliberately aligned layers consisting of three hyper-and two hypoechoic layers (Fig.…”
