Ultrasonographical aspects of urinary schistosomiasis: Assessment of morphological lesions in the upper and lower urinary tract

Abstract: Ultrasonographic evaluation of 213 patients with urinary schistosomiasis in different age groups was performed in an endemic area of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The results were compared with 94 age matched controls without urinary schistosomiasis. In patients the bladder showed thickening of the wall, polypoid lesions of the mucosa and bladder wall, calcifications and urinary retention. Urinary tract obstruction, predominantly unilateral, was demonstrated. The lesions increased in severity with the inte… Show more

“…As reported by many investigators, children had higher rates of infection, heavy infection, and pathologic lesions than adults. 5,8,9 One third of the 7-14-year-old children had ureteric dilatation and about half of them had bladder lesions; similar figures were reported from Tanzania. 10 Bladder lesions included mostly bladder polyps, bladder wall thickening, and irregularities.…”

“…Previous community-based ultrasound studies have indicated that severe bladder pathology occurs in school-aged children and that this group should be targeted for intervention [7][8][9][10]. This study showed that there was a peak of minor bladder wall pathology at age 5-9 years but that more-severe bladder leat New York University on June 20, 2015 http://jid.oxfordjournals.org/ Downloaded from Figure 3.…”

“…It is safe, rapid, noninvasive, and acceptable and applicable in field settings, and it enables examinations of large numbers of people at a relatively low cost per capita [7][8][9][10][11]. Ultrasonography is the only technique that is feasible at present for field use to assess the impact of the disease in terms of damage to organs, the regression of lesions after treatment, and the resurgence of pathological lesions due to reinfection [12].…”

“…Dittrich and Doehring [7] first reported a detailed evaluation of ultrasonographic abnormalities of urinary tract schistosomiasis in 1986. Comparing their study and the present results shows agreement between the forms and location of urinary bladder lesions.…”
