Ultrasound appearance of myositis ossificans

Abstract: Ultrasonic evaluation of a soft tissue mass of the thigh was performed and suggested the diagnosis of myositis ossificans. Correlation with routine radiographic studies is made, as well as with the follow-up radiographic examination.

“…The calcification becomes apparent sooner on ultrasound than on radiographs and quickly develops typical acoustic shadowing ( Figure 11) [13]. The calcification may develop along the plane of the muscle bundles [14], or may be more irregular [15]. At early stages of development the appearances may mimic a soft tissue sarcoma, and although the typical distribution of calcification at the periphery of myositis is different to the central calcification noted in tumours, it may be extremely difficult to make this distinction.…”

“…Initially, the intermediate zone contains foci of echodense islands and will not be uniformly re¯ective. Later, the foci of echodense islands rapidly become con¯uent 68,69,135 and the complete zone phenomena can be seen sonographically. As the NHO matures, the peripheral rim of the intermediate zone becomes more re¯ective on US due to increased mineralization 67 ± 69 and 4 ± 6 weeks after the ®rst clinical signs the NHO behaves like corticated bone.…”

“…Serial sonography allows di erentiation from muscle tears, soft tissue haematoma, abscess, thrombosis and soft tissue tumor. 67,68,119,135,136 Sonography has the advantage of the possibility of bedside application, is relatively cheap, and requires no radiation.…”

“…Kramer's report [18] is among the first to use ultrasonography for HO detection, describing the sonographic pictures of an ovoid, relative echo-free mass and a center core of calcification. Thomas and colleagues [19] later stated that the "zone phenomenon," the centrifugal maturation fashion of HO, can be seen with ultrasonography.…”
