Ultrasound‐assisted extraction of fucoxanthin from Sargassum angustifolium and Cystoseira indica brown algae

Abstract: Macroalgae or seaweeds are the most abundant source of bioactive compounds and are commonly found in three major groups of marine algae, Chlorophyceae (green algae), Phaeophyceae (brown algae), and Rhodophyceae (red algae) which exhibit numerous promising biological activities (Mohamed et al., 2012). Brown seaweeds, the second-most abundant group of marine algae, include approximately 2000 species. Among them, Sargassum spp., Laminaria spp., Ascophyllum spp., Fucus spp., and Turbinaria spp. are considered as s… Show more

“…Moreover, α-linolenic acid ( 12 ) with a mass ion peak at m / z 277 was identified in C. tamariscifolia . Linolenic acid was previously identified in C. compressa and C. indica extracts [ 31 , 45 ].…”

“…The fucoxanthin contents of S. duplicatum and S. binderi were reported to be 1010 µg g −1 and 730 µg g −1 dry weight, respectively. The fucoxanthin content of S. angustifolium (harvested from the Persian Gulf coast of Iran) was recorded to be 700 µg g −1 dry weight [ 64 ]. In Japan, the fucoxanthin content of S. horneri was reported to be 3700–10,810 µg g −1 dry weight when cultured in December to June at temperatures from 2.8 to 13.6 °C, and the highest levels of fucoxanthin were obtained in February (10,810 µg g −1 dry weight) [ 62 ].…”

“…Ultrasound assisted extraction is based on the principle of acoustic cavitation or hydrodynamic cavitation, which is produced by collapsing of microscopic gas bubbles produced during the simultaneous fluctuation of high pressure and low pressure on the solution [41] . This phenomenon increases the mass transfer rate and penetration capability of the solvent which induces the release of intracellular phytocompounds into the solvent [57] . UAE method has been adopted by many researchers in the recent past to extract phytocompounds from different plant based sources such as purple potato [13] ; black jamun [70] ; mango peel [34] ; and grapes [77] .…”
