Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction of Phenolic Compounds from Psidium cattleianum Leaves: Optimization Using the Response Surface Methodology

Abstract: In this study, conditions for the ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) of soluble polyphenols from Psidium cattleianum (PC) leaves were optimized using response surface methodology (RSM) by assessing the effect of extraction time (XET = 2, 4, and 6 min), sonication amplitude (XSA = 60, 80, and 100%), and pulse cycle (XPC = 0.4, 0.7, and 1 s). Furthermore, the optimized UAE conditions were compared with a conventional aqueous–organic extraction (AOE) method for extracting total phenolics; moreover, a phenolic p… Show more

“…Analysis of variance (ANOVA, p < 0.05) for total flavonoid content showed that the model and quadratic coefficients (A, B, and C) were significant, in contrast to their interaction (Table 4 ). In addition, they had a significant correlation coefficient (R 2 = 0.90) and adequate experimental data for the estimated model (no fit, p > 0.05) (Tables 3 , 4 ), suggesting an approximation of a real system 34 . Total flavonoid content is optimized by elevated temperature, long extraction time and unsaturated solvent–solute concentration (Fig.…”

“…The efficacy of UAE for extracting bioactive compounds from plant materials is markedly influenced by the sonication amplitude [ 13 ]. The ultrasonic probe produces ultrasonic waves with high intensity when contacting with CLP [ 25 ]. CLP distributed in the solvent was affected by the energy generated by the explosion of the microbubble [ 26 ].…”

“…In general, ultrasound has been applied to increase the efficacy of plant extraction due to the cavitation effect. González-Silva et al [ 25 ] used ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) of polyphenols from Psidium cattleianum (PC) leaves to improve the yield extraction. Furthermore, Chotphruethipong et al [ 16 ] used ultrasound for the extraction of phenolics from cashew leaf, and the yield was increased.…”
