Aluminum dross results from the re-melting of used aluminum cans, and is a valuable resource containing alumina. In general, aluminum dross contains oxides of Al, Ca, Fe, Mg, Si and Ti and some salts. As a continuation of the previous work to recover pure alumina from the dross, the effect of employing ultrasound wave in the NaOH solution was investigated to improve the leaching percentage of alumina from the mechanically activated dross. The use of ultrasound improved the leaching percentage of alumina from 35% to 60% and resulted in a leaching solution where the purity of aluminate ion was 99%. Among the optimum conditions (5 M NaOH, 50 o C, 4 h, pulp density of 100 g/L and ultrasonic power 100 W), leaching time had a remarkable effect on the dissolution of alumina in the presence of ultrasound. The combined effect of ultrasound and the addition of CaCl 2 and organic acids to the NaOH solution was also investigated. Roasting of the black dross with CaCl 2 followed by ultrasound leaching did not improve the leaching percentage of alumina. The presence of organic acids in the NaOH solution increased the leaching percentage of alumina as well as silica, and thus was not favorable for recovering pure aluminate solution from the black dross.

Enzymatic synthesis of cinnamyl propionate from cinnamyl alcohol and propionic acid in a solvent free condition

This work illustrates the synthesis of cinnamyl propionate in the presence of lipase biocatalyst. The esterification reaction was performed in a solvent free condition with cinnamyl alcohol and propionic acid using fermase CALB™ 10000, a commercial lipase. Experiments were conducted to study different operating parameters such as enzyme loading, temperature, mole ratio, speed of agitation, and reusability of enzyme. Various kinetic parameters affecting esterification reaction were evaluated to synthesize cinnamyl propionate. It has been observed that the data obtained follows random bi-bi mechanism with inhibition by both acid and alcohol substrate. The highest conversion of cinnamyl propionate obtained is 87.89% after 7 h at optimum parameters: enzyme loading 2% (w/v), temperature 60 °C, acid to alcohol ratio 1:3, molecular sieves 6% (w/v) and agitation speed 200 rpm. Limitation of diffusion mass transfer between the enzyme surface and substrate does not show a significant effect on reaction kinetics. The study of repeated use of enzyme shows that it maintains 90% of its catalytic activity after six successive batches.

Esters of short chain acids and alcohols are found in nature as compounds of flavors. Lately the method for their manufacture has been the enzymatic esterification in non-conventional media. Although several reactions have been studied in various media (organic solvents, ionic liquids, supercritical fluids, solvent-free systems), there has been no systematic investigation to clarify the effects of chain length and order of alcohols on the activity of the enzyme. In this work acetic acid was used as an acyl donor and the roles of the linear and branched chains of C2-C8 primary, secondary and tertiary alcohols on the activity of Novozym 435, the widely used lipase preparation were studied. Both the length of the carbon chain and the order of the alcohol were found to strongly influence the activity of the enzyme using the same operational parameters for the reactions. As a result of this project general conclusions were made with regard to the characters of alcohols affecting the reaction rates, which can be applied to other similar reactions.
