Ultrasound-assisted melt mixing for the preparation of UHMWPE/OMMT nanocomposites

Abstract: Ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE)/organic montmorillonite (OMMT) nanocomposites were prepared via a self-made vane mixer which could supply a synergy of ultrasound and extensional deformation. Structure and working principle of this novel mixer were illustrated in detail. Effects of the OMMT content, mixing time, and ultrasound treat time on composites’ morphology, rheological properties, and thermal properties were reported in terms of transmission electron microscopy (TEM), wide-angle X-ray sc… Show more

“…UHMWPE possesses high strength and chemical resistance, sufficient wear resistance, and a low friction coefficient [4][5][6]. Moreover, a wide range of operational properties of UHMWPE composite materials can be achieved by adding different fillers [7,8] and using different technological methods for matrix modification: ultrasonic processing [9,10], radiation modification [11,12], and mechanical stimulus in a planetary mill [13,14]. However, in most cases, these methods do not lead to a significant improvement in the complex of mechanical and tribological properties.…”

“…Zhai 45 used this device to prepare PP matrix composites, which had good compatibility and significant mechanical properties. Yin 46 and Yu 47 designed a laboratory-scale vane mixer (VM). Depending on the uniquely designed eccentric shaft and vanes to generate a periodic extensional flow, the VM realizes a short-process circulating flow of material, which effectively reduces the working space.…”

“…Thus, finds suitable to be used in various biomedical industries. Liang et al 25 explored the growth of organic montmorillonite (OMMT) clay-filled UHMWPE nanocomposite by Ultrasound-assisted melt mixing. It showed that melt mixing with ultrasonic and extensional deformation was beneficial in silicate layer exfoliation, filler distribution, and dispersion.…”
