Ultrasound Characteristics of Calf Deep Vein Thrombosis and Residual Vein Obstruction After Low Molecular Weight Heparin Treatment

Abstract: A clot diameter ≥5 mm is found in only 76% of CDVT patients and a clot diameter ≥3.5 mm may be more appropriate as a threshold for CDVT. After 6 weeks of anticoagulant treatment, half of CDVT patients had recanalization and recanalization was not correlated with clot characteristics at enrolment, but with mobility of the patients.

“…There are limited data investigating whether the initial thrombus size has an effect on the overall resolution. Sartori et al [14] found that the recanalization rate was not correlated to calf vein thrombus diameter at enrolment (p = 0.93), and there was no difference in recanalization rates between clots that were <5 mm and ≥5 mm.…”

“…The venous thrombus was located using bilateral whole-leg USG examination 9) (Aloka prosound® α 10: Hitachi-Aloka Medical Corp., Tokyo, Japan). The patients were divided into two groups; one received both pre- and post-operative anticoagulant therapy, while the other group was only administered the same post-operatively.…”

“…Board-certified vascular medicine physicians performed DUS of both lower extremities with an EnVisor C HD (Philips Medical System S.p.A, Monza, Italy) using a standardized examination protocol. 14 The iliac, femoral, and popliteal veins were examined first, then calf veins were evaluated with the patient seated and their legs vertical. Calf veins were studied using various views: anterior-medial, posterior, and posterior-lateral.…”
